Clothes
Clothing is a major part of many societies across the world. The first function of clothing was to protect against daily life; for example to keep warm. Clothes also help to protect the body from hazardous activities such as cooking and exercise. They also function as a barrier against germs and toxins to provide a hygienic barrier. Clothing also protects against sunburn or wind damage. Clothes are a useful tool for many societies as they can promote their society through their clothing, this can also help them to promote their morals, for example if they cover up all their skin or they have a lot of skin on show.
It is claimed that people started wearing clothes over 650,000 years ago, at this time clothes would have just been functional and provided for a purpose. However, this has completely changed over many of centuries; clothes are now worn by many people to make them look or feel nice. The clothing business is run by the fashion industry who promotes clothing to make people look and feel nice in their clothing which in turn funds their business.
There are many retail outlets that are specifically to sell clothing, but, due to the large demand of cheaper clothing, many supermarkets do their own ranges of clothing which is generally cheaper in price than the high street. This is a good marketing strategy by supermarkets as the clothes are appealing to customers who many not necessarily need any new garments, but as they walk through the supermarket they see an item they like and buy it without thinking about their need of the item.
