Jewellery

The accessory that is jewellery is thought to have been around for 100,000 years. Jewellery is a large way of expressing a person, a religion, a feeling or emotion and many other symbols. In older times wearing jewellery was seen as a symbol of wealth as only wealthy people could afford the jewellery to wear. In recent times jewellery has become inexpensive and the availability of jewellery has increased dramatically this means that most people will wear jewellery every day. However, some forms of jewellery are still seen as a sign of wealth.

One of biggest symbols jewellery shows is the sign of marriage. It has now become possible to buy engagement and wedding rings for under £20s from low cost supermarket chains thus making it possible for less fortunate people to show these symbols of their love for each other.

Jewellery is a big business for many different areas of retail. It is now a common occurrence for every clothing shop on the high street to sell cheap jewellery that is made from inexpensive metals and is unlikely to last a lifetime; the jewellery sold by these shops are merely just for fashion purposes. A proportion of shops in any city will be specifically dedicated to selling jewellery and this is where quality and more expensive pieces of jewellery are sold. Jewellers sell more expensive metals such as Gold, White Gold and Platinum. They also sell expensive gemstones and diamonds which cannot be found in any high street shop.
